National guidance to wind down non-urgent elective care throughout March, April and May meant that acute providers in one London ICS delivered significantly less elective care for their population of 2m. As the NHS entered a period of restoration and recovery in June, the system was faced with an accumulation of unprecedented elective demand. The 52-week waiting list grew almost 60-fold from February 2020 to mid-July 2020.
